Food Bank

Wesley Mimico United Church (WMUC) Food Bank serves people in our local community, who are isolated by poverty, illness and cultural differences.

Most are refugees or people on ODSP or Ontario Works or Pensions.

Some work in precarious jobs at low wages.

The WMUC Food Bank program delivers to people’s homes on a weekly basis (monthly for each family).

We deliver a variety of basic foods bread (from a local bakery), pasta, canned meat and fish, breakfast cereals, canned vegetables, beans and soups, pasta sauce and tomatoes, sugar, rice, tea, soap, toothpaste tooth brush & toilet paper.

We also provide a $10 grocery gift card (1 for single and 2 for families of 2 or more).

This way people can buy fresh food not handed out from the food bank.

The effects of the Pandemic restrictions increased isolation for seniors and people living alone, and this has continued to this day.

Thus, having a friendly call to see how you are doing and then having food delivered to your home has been extremely helpful for the people to whom we do deliveries.

Support for the food bank comes from financial and in-kind donations from Wesley Mimico United Church members and othersin the local community.

The WMUC Food Bank receives critical financial support through annual grants from Shining Waters Regional Council of the United Church of Canada.

The WMUC Food Bank also receives in-kind donations from food bank drives by John English and David Hornell schools.

In March 2026 the 138th Scout Group (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Venturers) conducted a food bank drive for the WMUC Food Bank in the Queesway and Kingsway area.

Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran church provides space to store WMUC Food Bank items.

In the past few years there has been an influx of refugee families (mostly Ukranian) and new clients.

In 2025, the WMUC Food Bank made 1,211 deliveries, which is more than 100 each month.

A note of desperation has entered into some of our contacts as they face times with little or no food.

The gratitude expressed by many clients is heart warming.

Wesley Mimico Food Bank financial resources are challenged due to the increase in clients and the inflation induced increase in food costs.

and enable us to continue to provide help to the hungry in our midst.
